Theme: The Incas and the Llamas

Grade Level Appropriateness:
5th grade (can include grades 4 - 6). Some activities may be used at lower grade levels.

Overview:
This unit is proposed as supplemental material. The 5th grade social studies textbook often contains a chapter on Ancient Civilizations including the Mayas, Aztecs, and Incas. The unit encompasses the integration of reading skills, critical thinking skills, research, writing skills, and map skills. Additional reading material is found within Andy@School, in the article titled: The Llamas, The Incas, Perú, and the Andes. Also, it is worthwhile to visit the section titled: Los Criadores, as it is devoted entirely to llamas.

Focus:
Students will understand the importance the llama had to the Inca people and expand their knowledge of the ancient Inca civilization and basic facts about llamas.
